Stop the leaks

Letter to London local newspapers
Sir
People across London are far more aware than they used to be about the need to conserve water. Our efforts, combined with higher than expected rainfall, have helped to prevent another hosepipe ban this summer.
Thames Water is playing its part too. Leakage figures are slowly dropping and the company did just manage to meet the water regulator Ofwat's targets. However, Thames continues to lose 790 million litres per day - 214 litres per customer - through leaky pipes. This is still far too high.
Ofwat has told Thames it must now reduce its leakage figures to 690 million litres per day by 2010 - a mere 15 percent decrease. Should we not be setting much more stringent and ambitious targets on Thames than this? Tell me your views at syed@syedkamall.com.
Yours sincerely
Syed Kamall MEP
