EU Wills and Succession proposals
Monday, 8th February 2010
Letter to London local newspapers
Dear Sir,
The EU is currently proposing a law which enables others to annul our lifetime decisions after we are gone. Under the Wills and Succession proposals, if you make a gift during your lifetime, this gift could be clawed back into your estate after your death, and then doled out as inheritance to someone else.
This disrespect of choices we may make in our lifetimes is alien to the British sense of fairness. While it might be sensible to address the fact that British citizens increasingly live, work and own property in other EU countries, this should not be at the expense of decisions that we and our families make.
Unfortunately, it is another example of the desire of Eurocrats to impose a one-size-fits all system of law without understanding our different legal traditions.
Yours sincerely,
Syed Kamall
Conservative MEP for London
